Pulpotomies & Pulpectomies

Known as “baby root canals,” pulpotomies are performed on primary (baby) teeth damaged by decay. When the nerve (pulp) of the tooth becomes infected, your child can feel pain and discomfort. If left untreated, it can result in the loss of the tooth. During a pulpotomy, the infected portion of the nerve tissue is removed, the space is disinfected and treated with an antibacterial medication designed to preserve the rest of the nerve and the root of the tooth. Lastly, a crown or filling is placed to protect the tooth from further damage or contamination.

In certain cases, pulpectomies are necessary for primary and permanent teeth. In this procedure, the complete nerve is removed, the space is disinfected, and a temporary or permanent material is used to prevent further decay.
